1. New U.S. attorney in Birmingham inherits
public corruption caseload
by Robin DeMonia for Birmingham News
Alice Martin is no longer the U.S. attorney in Birmingham.
For admirers who appreciated Martin's zeal for public corruption
cases, it's a solemn time. For critics who found Martin insufferable,
this kind of jubilation hasn't been experienced since Dorothy's house
plopped down in Munchkinland.
Which puts Martin's replacement, Joyce Vance, in a bit of an awkward
position.
Vance will inherit many of the controversial cases that made Martin a
hero in some circles and a villain in others.
