Joyce Vance took the oath as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of
Alabama this afternoon before more than 300 people including 42
judges and Attorney General Eric Holder, a Vance spokesperson said
today.

Holder did not speak at the event, though he kissed Vance after the
ceremony when she gave him a copy of what’s known as the
Birmingham Pledge — a vow to treat all people with respect, The
Associated Press reported.

The ceremony was held at the Robert S. Vance Federal Building,
named after her father-in-law, a federal appeals court judge on the
11th circuit who was murdered in 1989 after he opened a nail-bomb
package mailed to his home. His widow, Helen, was in attendance,
according to The AP.
