Investigation Advances For U.S. Attorneys
Scandal
by Evan Peres for the Wall Street Journal
WASHINGTON -- Justice Department lawyers have filed a grand-jury
referral stemming from the 2006 U.S. attorneys scandal, according to
people familiar with the probe, a move indicating that the yearlong
investigation may be entering a new phase.
The grand-jury referral, the first time the probe has moved beyond
the investigative phase, relates to allegations of political meddling in
the Justice Department's civil-rights division, these people say.
Specifically, it focuses on possible perjury by Bradley Schlozman, who
served a year as interim U.S. attorney in Kansas City, Mo.

Today's Must Read
by Kate Klonick of TPM Muckraker
....In testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Mr. Schlozman
conceded boasting to associates about the number of Republicans he
managed to hire at the department. The allegations against him
helped feed months of scandal that eventually forced the resignation
of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales in August.
. . . At a Senate hearing last June, Democrats zeroed in on allegations
that Mr. Schlozman was part of an effort by Republican political
officials to pursue vote-fraud investigations in important swing states
as a way to gain electoral advantage.

Siegelman Prosecution Questioned
NewsChannel 19's Jamie McGriff reports
....Now eyes are now falling on U.S. Attorney Alice Martin.
She heads up Birminham based U.S. Attorney's office, which also
covers the Huntsville area.
Martin's office is now under investigation for its prosecution of
Siegelman.
She says contrary to what some say, her office's prosecution of the
Alabama Democrat had nothing to do with any pressure from
Republicans.

A Case of Politics
Editorial in NYT
Don Siegelman, the former Alabama governor, is asking a federal
appeals court to throw out his conviction on dubious corruption
charges. His appeal has some surprising backers: a bipartisan group
of 54 former state attorneys general has submitted a brief on his
behalf. Congress is also investigating charges that Mr. Siegelman was
politically targeted.
Mr. Siegelman was the Democrats’ strongest candidate to retake the
Alabama governorship, and Congress has uncovered evidence that
the United States attorney’s office in Montgomery — with possible
White House input — may have decided to prosecute him to
undermine his campaign. The former presidential adviser Karl Rove,
who has been accused of pushing to have Mr. Siegelman indicted,
has been subpoenaed by both the House and Senate, but has
refused to testify.

How A Corrupt "Bushie" Operates in Alabama
by Roger Shuler of Legal Schnauzer
...Just how corrupt, and brazen, is Alice Martin. Recall in her previous
e-mail that she said it was "standard procedure" for a complaint
alleging honest-services mail fraud to go to the U.S. Postal Inspection
Service.
