Rove hits up local GOP at fundraiser
by Jeremy Morrison of NewsHerald.com Panama City, FL

....In his question and answer session with the media, Rove also
addressed the “ugly things” he sometimes encounters about himself
in the media. One such item pertained to embattled former-Alabama
Gov. Don Siegelman’s accusation that Rove had a hand in pressing
for an investigation that eventually led to the Democrat’s conviction on
corruption charges in 2006.

On Thursday, the House Judiciary Committee threatened to subpoena
Rove if he does not agree to testify on the matter by May 12. Rove
has offered to speak with the committee, though not under oath and
without a transcript.

Siegelman given hero's welcome by Alabama
Democrats
by Bob Johnson of AP/al.com

Former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman received a hero's welcome
from Alabama Democrats at the party's annual dinner Friday night.

Siegelman was released on appeals bond from federal prison in
March. He had served nine months of a more than seven-year
conviction in a federal government corruption case before being
ordered released on bond by an appeals court. He has claimed that
his conviction was the result of a pattern of political prosecutions of
Democrats by the Justice Department.

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recognized Siegelman during her
speech to the party's annual Jefferson-Jackson dinner when she
promised to reform the U.S. Justice Department.

Several people in the audience yelled "God bless Don Siegelman" as
the crowd cheered and applauded for more than a minute.

"It touched my heart," Siegelman told The Associated Press later.
"Just looking out into the faces of my friends I could see the warmth
and joy and relief in their eyes."

What Karl Rove Fears Most
by Dan Froomkin of WashingtonPost.com

....When he's in situations where he knows his statements won't be
challenged -- lectures, op-eds, appearances on Fox News -- the
alleged master of political dirty tricks is happy to deny various
accusations that have been made against him. On the subject of the
possibly politically-motivated prosecution of a former Democratic
official, for instance, he's been all over the media, vaguely denying
involvement.

There is, however, one thing that Rove avoids at all cost: being forced
to answer a direct question -- especially under oath. So it's not
surprising that he refuses to do so before the Congressional
committee investigating what actually happened to that Democratic
official.

But things could be coming to a head.

Feds acknowledge error on travel for former
Ala. governor
By Ben Evans of AP/Al.com

....
Siegelman had requested to travel to New Orleans to visit friends,
including a journalist who makes documentaries. But probation
officials informed him Tuesday that he was being classified as a
special offender who would need approval from the district court there
to visit — a process that could take as long as a month.

Court officials in Alabama said the change was not a new restriction
and that they were simply applying existing rules established by the
New Orleans court.

The mistake came as a result of a misunderstanding between officials
in Louisiana and Alabama about Siegelman's status, Redmond said.
