Report: Rove Wanted Dirt on Alabama Gov.
by The Associated Press in the NYT

....In its statement, CBS said Rove declined to speak with ''60
Minutes.''

The statement says Rove approached Simpson at a 2001 meeting,
when Siegelman was still governor.

''Karl Rove asked you to take pictures of Siegelman?'' reporter Scott
Pelley asks.

''Yes,'' Simpson replies.

''In a compromising sexual position with one of his aides,'' Pelley says.

''Yes, if I could,'' she responds.

Simpson said she is speaking out because Siegelman's seven-year
sentence on corruption charges bothers her, the release said. She
said she found no evidence of an affair.

The False and the Absurd
By Quin Hillyer of the American Spectator

....Spokesman Mark Corallo added that Rove personally told him he
was "astonished that 60 Minutes was running this false and absurd
story." According to Corallo, Rove does not remember ever meeting
the woman making the allegation. It beggars belief that Rove, while in
the White House, and with all of the sophisticated campaign tools
available to him, would enlist some random Alabama lawyer to try to
photograph Mr. Siegelman in flagrante.

Rove and Siegelman
by Scott Horton of Harper's

....Evans is dead wrong on this. If he had written “It has not previously
been reported that she said that Rove…” he would be fine....
My understanding is that she also gave this information to
congressional investigators when they initially interviewed her. So
Evans is incorrect. Or, more to the point, he assumes in his writing
more than he could possibly know.

....Now let’s look at the CBS’s teaser on the piece. It addresses this
question:

Rove would not speak to 60 Minutes, but elsewhere has denied
being involved in efforts to discredit Siegelman.

So it suggests that Rove was contacted and refused to speak.

....In fact, Rove was contacted by CBS and did speak with CBS about
the allegations. Rove insisted that his comments could not be used in
any way without his prior permission.

American Gangster
by Brad Friedman of the Brad Blog

The U.S. Attorney Purge scandal still ranks, in my estimation, as the
key to unlocking almost every other unprecedented domestic (and
perhaps even foreign) criminal abuse of power by the White House.
The matter strikes at the very heart of the dirty dealings by all of the
President's men and, if it were to ever be fully cracked open, would
likely display the totality of the blood and guts of the Administration's
highly illegal, fully politicized takeover and wholesale abuse of the U.
S. criminal justice system.

Little wonder then that the White House has determined to go to the
mattresses when it comes to fighting off both the House and Senate
Judiciary Committees' investigations into the matter. They've
determined they are better off playing chicken with Congress and
risking criminal contempt charges (which they believe they can either
refuse to enforce via the DoJ, or otherwise pardon the players
whenever necessary) by refusing to turn over requested documents
to Congress and ordering the refusal to testify by top officials such
as Karl Rove, Harriet Miers and Josh Bolten.
